MeasurementsThe aim of this course is to provide basic knowledge regarding quantity systems, unit systems and unit of measurements. The working principle, the metrological properties, and the manufacturing of the sensors employed to measure thermal and mechanical parameters in industrial processes will be analysed. Lastly, the guidelines to estimate the uncertainty in measurements will be examined

Measurements' LaboratoryThe course aims to provide basic knowledge regarding measurement systems development and designs of experiments. Students will carry out experiments in order to assess static characteristics of a measurement chain, focusing on the calibration curve, on the estimation of the uncertainty and on the loading effect of a measuring system. Furthermore, the course will provide knowledge regarding the experimental assessment of the dynamic response of a measuring system, the signal conditioning (analog amplifiers and electronic filters), and the analysis of experimental data.
Medical devicesThis course aims to provide basic knowledge concerning the principle of work and technology of biomedical equipment. In particular the course focuses on the following medical equipment: cardiac defibrillators, medical lasers, lung ventilators, anaesthetic systems, electroencephalographs and high frequency surgical equipment.
Acceptance tests and performance periodical checks of medical devicesThe course aims to provide basic knowledge regarding Guidelines to acceptance tests and to safety and/or performance periodical checks of medical devices. Whit these purposes the most commonly used approaches to estimate the main characteristics of medical equipment will be examined. Students will carry out experiments in order to test medical equipment (e.g., medical lasers, lung ventilators, anaesthetic systems), focusing on risk analysis, on experimental data analysis and on data presentation. The course will provide knowledge regarding the factors which influence the quality of diagnostic images, and concerning the performances of TC-, MRI- and ultrasound- scan. Furthermore, the safety of medical laser will be analyzed in detail. Lastly, the main standards related to medical equipment will be examined
