Biography
Carlo Massaroni is an Assistant Professor of Measurements and Biomedical Instrumentation. He works in the Measurements and Biomedical Instrumentation Laboratory (MTMBiLAB), Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma.
He was born in Anzio (Rome), Italy, on August 02, 1988. He received the M.Sc. in Biomedical Engineering (MSc) with full marks from the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, Italy in 2012 and the Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the Università Campus Bio-Medico di Roma, in 2017. During 2016 he was Visiting Student at University of Kent, United Kingdom. In 2018 he was Visiting Researcher at Universidade Federal de Viçosa, Brazil.
His research interests are focused on the design, development and assessment of technologies and devices for physiological measurements. In particular: design of wearable systems for non-invasive measurement of respiratory and cardiac parameters; tests of available technologies for non-invasive measurements in the medical field; fiber optics for development of sensors and measuring chains for medical field (strain and temperature measurements). Most of his activities are strongly related to hardware development with the goal of building reliable, robust and accurate stand-alone systems.
He is involved in numerous national and international projects. Among others, he is the Principal Investigator in “MONREAB” Project (Platform for monitoring the rehabilitation process)(2019-2022) funded by Fondazione Giovan Battista Baroni (http://www.monreab.com/), WP responsible in Life2020 "HEREMOS" Project (Health Remote Monitoring System)(2017-2019) funded by Regione Lazio (https://www.heremos.com/), WP responsible in "HOPE" Project (HOspital to the PatiEnt)(2019-2021) funded by UCBM, task responsible in "SENSE-Risc" Project (Development of smart instrumented clothes for the prevention and mitigation of workers' safety risks)(2019-2021) founded by INAIL - ISTITUTO NAZIONALE PER L'ASSICURAZIONE CONTRO GLI INFORTUNI SUL LAVORO under BRIC Call, task responsible in H2020/ICT EU project "CONBOTS" (CONnected through roBOTS: physically coupling humans to boost handwriting and music learning) (2020-2025). He has been involved in other national and international projects as participant in PRIN 2012 “Mechanical measurements for the musculoskeletal apparatus: novel and standardizable methodologies for metrological assessment of measurement systems” Project, principal investigator of “MoCBA” Project funded by International Society of Biomechanics , and participant in “Evaluation of Bone strength and Wnt pathway in obese patients” Project funded by UCBM.
He is the author of 100 papers on scientific journals, international conference proceedings and book chapters. With results obtained in his M.Sc. and Ph.D. Thesis he won in 2015 the GNB Award and SIAMOC Award, in 2017 the GNB Award. He received several Grants from International Societies (ISB, ESB, IEEE) for travels and project abroad.
Dr. Massaroni is a member of the IEEE, IEEE Instrumentation and Measurement Society, of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology, of the IET. He is currently the Chair of the “Sensors for Biomechanics” topical committee of the IEEE Sensors Italy Chapter. He serves as a member of the EMB Standards Committee "IEEE P1752 Open Mobile Health Working Group" focused on the definition of specifications for a mobile health data applications programming interface (API) and standardized representations for mobile health data and metadata. He is a members-at-large of the Technical Committee on Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing (BIIP), IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS).
